4 things you should know about the Black Lives Matter movement

With the countless deaths of black men and women at the hands of the police, a movement has taken force in our country that cannot be ignored. Black Lives Matter is a movement group that is fighting against police brutality of black people.

Here are four things you should know about the Black Lives Matter movement.

1. Black Lives Matter doesn’t mean it’s the only race that matters

The primary purpose of Black Lives Matter is to stand up and empower black lives simply and that they are no less than other races. The movement wants to be understood as their main point is that black Americans are at more risk than any other race when it comes to police interaction.

2. Black Lives Matter is a peaceful movement

In 2016 alone, we have seen countless incidents of black lives being murdered or assaulted in the hands of the police. For most people, the immediate response to Black Lives Matter is that “all lives matter.” While this is indeed true, it is not as well spoken in the interactions with police officers. The Black Lives Matter movement wants to chance the violence against officers and their society.

3. All races have joined the movement

People of all different races have joined the movement as they also want to stand up against treatment received in America. Allies of other races are fighting against discrimination.

4. Black Lives Matter is more than police brutality

Since force in social media has taken the awareness of the group, there has been a lot of criticism against them with very little information. Citizens are so quick to judge when all they understand is the protest against cops.

With all the chaos in the world we face today, racism shouldn’t be one of that. Repeating history is only leading us back into the past, when in fact, we should be standing against it.

5 commonly ignored statistics related to crime in the US

LWith the numerous murders and shootings happening in America today, white on white crime is higher than the black crime issue that is portrayed daily. Here are five commonly ignored statistics related to crime in the United States.

1. Nearly 85% of White Murder Victims are White

According to FBI’s homicide statistics, a majority of 85% homicide cases were carried out by white people against the same race. While the ratio of murders of black people against black is higher, the number of white murderers significantly exceeds the rate.

2. White People Are More Common in Gang Murders

With the array of attention focused on the gang-related crimes in predominantly black areas, minimal coverage has been covering the epidemic of white on white gang murders. In fact, nearly 54% of gang-related homicide crimes are committed by white people while 42% is committed by black people. The majority of gang-related victims are 57% white and 40% black.

3. White People Kill More White People Than Black People Kill Each Other

According to data taken in 2011, more than 2,600 Caucasians killed nearly 3,200 white people. This is extreme when compared to the 2,400 Black People murdered who’ve killed 2,700 African Americans. This makes the White on White crime clearly a bigger issue that is ignored in the U.S.

4. White People Kill More Individuals of Other Races than Any Other Race

As Caucasians are the largest demographic in the United States, white people are shown to have a higher crime rate than any other race in America. In fact, the general populations of vulnerable victims are the elderly and children. Most homicide targets are spouses and family members. White people commit more gang-related and sex-related homicides than any other race in America today.

5. Black People are more likely to be victims of police brutality than Whites

Despite blacks making nearly 13$ of the population, over half of homicidal cases in the U.S. are committed by black people. In 2013, African American criminals were engaged in nearly 40% of murders when compared to 31% of Caucasians.

Whether we like to admit it or not, Police brutality is becoming an epidemic in the United States. We must not ignore the facts that white people are equally involved in violent crime.

3 reasons why police officers need better training

Police training starts at the academy when officers are trained with the concepts of safety that are emphasized almost religiously. Rookies are taught that the first rule of law is to be able to end their shift and go home every night. Here are three reasons why police officers need better training.

Officers must learn to communicate in a calm manner

The hostility in many cases doesn’t necessary require aggressive force but rather a calm response from the officer to help reduce tension. Although this cannot always be followed as desired, starting with a calm manner of communication may help ease tension.

A few days ago, Antronie Scott, a 36-year-old black man was fatally shot after a police officer had mistaken his cellphone for a gun. As Scott was wanted on two felony warrants, Scott who had spun around too quickly had caused the officer to fear for his life. – Thus leading the use of force by police has recently turned the heads of members of Congress.

This grew concern as several officers have been suspended for police brutality for beating Roger Carlos severely that his injuries required surgery that left him paralyzed. To top it off, it was a case of a mistaken identity.

Many officers have become distracted in their occupation

Police officials have argued that the approach of American policing isn’t new but rather almost forgotten. Many have become distracted throughout the years as some consider themselves as a “law-enforcement officer.” This mischaracterization isn’t what they were hired for. In fact, the statutes call them peace officers while police officers refer to themselves as law-enforcement – which is only a small portion of what they should be doing in policing.

Body cameras shouldn’t be the only reason to make officers follow the law

Body cameras help give us a better perspective of the before, during and after the incident. But while you can see the panoramic view of what is happening, it shouldn’t be a training deficiency of how the officer must act. Proper training involves the psychological development in practice as some officers were even questioned for their dynamics on the field. Body cameras provide an excellent reminder for them to train better, but actions should also be followed without them.

Are police officers doing a good job? Most of them, yes. Although, those who don’t require more assessment and training in the work field.
